‘A huge boost’ - North Devon eco-group recognised in Parliament after 2.4-tonne cleanup

North Devon MP Ian Roome tables House of Commons Early Day Motion to commend Earth Action North Devon for its 2025 Impact Report, celebrating 1,500 volunteers who removed over 2.4 tonnes of plastic and litter from the Tarka Trail and local estuaries.

An environmental charity in North Devon has received formal recognition in the House of Commons for its "formidable" impact on the local community.

Ian Roome, MP for North Devon, tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) to commend Earth Action North Devon following the release of the group’s 2025 Impact Report.

The report revealed that more than 1,500 local volunteers helped remove over 2.4 tonnes of litter and plastic across 40 clean-up events last year.

'A huge boost'

The news of the Parliamentary motion came as a surprise to the organisation’s leadership. Claire Moodie, CEO of Earth Action North Devon, received the notification via a formal letter from the House of Commons.

“We are incredibly grateful to Ian Roome for taking the time to recognise the hard work and dedication of our formidable and passionate team,” Ms. Moodie said.

"Seeing our efforts acknowledged at such a high level is a huge boost for everyone involved."

An Early Day Motion is used by MPs to draw the attention of Parliament to a particular cause or event.

While it does not change the law, Mr. Roome said it “puts something on the parliamentary record”  to show that community sustainability matters.

Mr. Roome, who has personally participated in the charity’s Tarka Trail and Estuary clean-ups, praised the “hands-on” nature of the group.

“Earth Action North Devon are quietly doing the kind of practical work that really does make us better,” the MP said.

“I join them in calling for government policy to match that ambition and properly support sustainability for the long term.”

2025 in numbers:

  • 1,500+ local volunteers engaged.
  • 2.4 tonnes of litter and plastic removed.
  • 40+ community clean-up events held.
  • Expanded reach into repair cafés, schools, and local businesses.

Ms. Moodie added that the recognition reinforces the charity's commitment to building on their "vital work" throughout the coming year.
