Essential repair work to lifts and escalators at Fleet Walk in Torquay has started this week.

Torbay Council is working with Milligan, the strategic asset manager for Fleet Walk, to carry out the programme, which aims to improve access throughout the shopping centre and car park.

The first phase focuses on the escalator serving Sports Direct and the gallery. Work began during the week commencing Monday 5 January and is expected to be completed by 21 February 2026. It will include a full mechanical overhaul and specialist refurbishment of key components, with the escalator due to return to service immediately afterwards.

The next stage will see repairs carried out to Lift Seven, located toward the harbour end of Fleet Walk and connecting all levels of the car park with the gallery and Fleet Street. That work is scheduled to begin in March, with further details to be announced nearer the time.

Councillor Chris Lewis, Torbay Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Place Development and Economic Growth, said he was pleased to see the project underway.

He said: “I’m pleased to see essential repair and refurbishment work beginning on the lifts and escalators at Fleet Walk shopping centre. The planned work will help to ensure reliable connections between the shopping centre, car park, and surrounding areas, improving access for all visitors and supporting nearby businesses to thrive.

“The first phase has already begun, and I’d like to thank visitors for their patience while these essential works are carried out.”

While work is ongoing, step-free access remains available via levels two and three of the Fleet Walk car park, with alternative access routes signposted. TK Maxx lifts and escalators also remain in operation.

The council says there is sufficient parking capacity to accommodate all users, including those requiring accessible parking.
