The amazing Peggy Crome: Female athlete of the year at the age of 82

Octogenarian Peggy Crome, from Westward Ho!, has been crowned the British Female Age Group Athlete of the Year.

Peggy, 82, was the unanimous choice in the award run annually by Age Group News and her incredible list of 2025 achievements demonstrates why this was such an easy choice for the panel.

Age Groups News said: “At the age of 82, Peggy Crome was a triple international medallist this year, winning gold at the World and European triathlon championships and the World aquathlon Championships.

“Her race at the World Triathlon Championships in Wollongong was her 60th time representing Great Britain in a career which spans back to the sport’s early beginnings. Her 25th international career gold medals saw her become GBs current most prolific gold medallist of all time.”

Back in March, Peggy told the Gazette that she reaches out to those who may feel discouraged by age and unable to participate in athletics. 

She encourages them, saying: “Many people underestimate their abilities. I advise starting with a gentle jog and transitioning to power walking when needed. When I faced difficulties, I reassured myself that improvement was possible.”
