New Torquay shop opens with community at its heart

Yarnology launched during the St Marychurch and Babbacombe lights, bringing a community-led business to the area

New Torquay shop opens with community at its heart

The arrival of Christmas in Babbcombe and St Marychurch coincided with the opening of a new shop.

Gemma Wills is the woman  behind the local yarn store in Babbacombe after the loss of the last yarn shop in 2023 through retirement.

Gemma says: “Yarnology is a traditional family-run yarn shop with community at its heart, looking to give back to the town I love and am proud to call home.

“At a time where mental health is on the decline, and loneliness is more prevalent than ever, a local yarn shop such as Yarnology can help bring people together, support positive mental health through classes and community and free social events.”

She revealed: “My grandma had a yarn shop when I was a baby, then I managed The Yarn Dispensary in Kent, which became nationally recognised for its warm welcome, winning multiple industry awards.

“Now I’m excited to be bringing that to Torquay where my husband was born and raised, and where we've returned to bring up our little boy.”

The grand opening was timed to happen at the same time as Babbacombe Christmas Lights and featured a pop up shop from local Devon hand-dyer Kosy Kitchen Fibres.

Gemma says: “We are very much a traditional yarn shop with over 30 years of expertise in the craft and six years industry experience.”

She is also associated with Exeter-based publisher David and Charles and Search Press.  “Our plans are a free weekly sit and stitch social where everyone is welcome to enjoy a cuppa, crafting and company; regular affordable classes and workshops; free project support, classes in retirement communities, and kids clubs in the holidays.  Our community and customers are at the heart of all we do,” says Gemma.
