Residents of Torbay united on January 27 to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day, joining people globally in remembering the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

Led by Mayor Mark Spacagna, the tributes emphasised the importance of honouring the millions who suffered during these dark periods in history.

Holocaust Memorial Day, observed annually on January 27, marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. This year's theme, "Fragility of Freedom," was organised by the Holocaust Memorial Trust.

Residents, including Mayor Mark Spacagna, Torbay MP Kevin Foster, and Cllr Nicole Amil, gathered at the Holocaust Memorial Service held at Oldway Memorial Gardens in Paignton. Cllr Amil, responsible for overseeing the Armed Forces and veterans, joined the civic dignitaries in paying respects.

Mayor Spacagna shared, “It’s crucial to set aside this day to remember Holocaust victims and those affected by subsequent genocides. As a council, we take pride in commemorating this day and raising awareness about the importance of freedom."

The Torquay seafront festoon lights joined the commemoration by turning purple, a visual symbol of remembrance.

Mayor Spacagna reminded everyone that freedom, often taken for granted, is under threat for many worldwide.
