The pair believe in the motto, " full tummies and happy hearts"
A free hot meals service for all in South Molton set up by two local women is going from strength to strength and looking to spread its wings across North Devon.
Caterer Mandy Harding and mum-of-six Ioni Drake, the driving forces behind The Benita Project, currently run the project from South Molton’s YMCA and aim to provide warmth, companionship and nourishment to anyone, regardless of their background or financial situation.
Mandy, with her background in catering and Ioni, using her skills in public relations, have joined forces to ensure the project’s success.
They plan to extend their offerings beyond meals, with aspirations of providing life skills and cookery lessons. The initiative, born out of Mandy's desire to honour a late friend, has grown exponentially since it was set up last year.
Initially focused on monthly meals, The Benita Project responded to the cost-of-living crisis by offering free meals every Monday in January. The response was overwhelming, with 156, 193, and 133 meals served on consecutive Mondays despite challenging weather conditions.
“We wanted to create a space where everyone, whether facing financial struggles or abundance, could come together and share a meal. It’s about spreading joy and kindness in a world that needs it,” explained Ioni, a mother of six, and the project’s public relations and advertising manager.
"There is always a vegetarian and vegan option, plus we can cater for gluten free or any other dietary needs", she added.
The project relies solely on donations and while all contributions are welcome, they are not mandatory. Mandy and Ioni, determined to keep the flame of kindness burning, fill any financial gaps and make up for any shortfalls to ensure the project continues to thrive.
The Benita Project, poised to become a Community Interest Company (CIC), is driven not just by an aim to fill stomachs but to foster a sense of community.
Ioni said: “It’s really useful when Mandy, with her catering background, can give us access to great food. Everything that we make donation-wise goes directly back into the project."
“We always fund it throughout the year, but particularly for Christmas, which has been an absolute astronomical time for everybody.”
It’s also a family affair, with Ioni’s daughter Katie and son Lee volunteering and serving meals too.
Last Christmas, the duo served 181 people at their festive meal, marking a substantial leap from their first year when they served 87 meals.
“We’ve watched people walk in, not just hungry, but lonely. The impact goes beyond the meal; it’s about sharing smiles and building connections, even if it’s just for a couple of hours” said Ioni.
The Benita Project is not confined to South Molton. The pair have extended an invitation to anyone with a suitable venue to host their events.
Ioni said: “If you have a space where we can share our meals and spread our joy, please get in touch. We’re on Facebook, and you can also reach us at thebenitaproject@outlook.com.”
The YMCA in South Molton currently serves as home base, but the team is eager to spread their wings, offering meals every other Monday starting February.
“While we don’t focus on the numbers, it’s truly heartening to see the community come together. We believe in full tummies and happy hearts,” added Ioni.
