Exeter Racecourse is gearing up for a day of high-speed, pint-sized racing action as Shetland pony racing returns on Sunday, 23 March for its Family Fun Day.
Twelve Shetland ponies, ridden by future champion jockeys aged 8 to 13, will thunder down the home straight, putting on a spectacular show for racegoers of all ages.
The ponies, trained by Nikki Marsden and John Lamb, have been prepared like professional racehorses, ensuring an exciting and competitive spectacle.
John Lamb said: “We’re really looking forward to bringing the ponies to Exeter. Shetlands can have a bit of a reputation, but we work with them as a group, and they thrive on it. They’re trained like mini racehorses – we keep their minds active with a variety of activities, and the more they do, the more they seem to love it.”
Among the ponies to watch is Neville, making his racing debut, and Orla of Aukhorn, who has already shown promising form. John’s pick for the day is Officer of Aukhorn, who struggled at Chelmsford last year but is expected to put in a much stronger performance this time.
Other ponies competing include Arlo of Aukhorn, Orknies Gold, Orknies Little Joe, Lille Rosendal, Edgar Bergli, Julian, Lunar Larsen, Knix Nadine, and Orknies Seigfried.
The Shetland races will take place in front of a packed Haldon Hill grandstand, adding to the excitement of an already action-packed Family Fun Day. Under 18s can attend for free, making it an affordable day out for families.
Alongside the Shetland racing, the event will feature a children’s running race down the home straight at 1:30pm, plus a carnival-style extravaganza including funfair stalls, crazy golf, glitter artists, balloon twisters, and a Punch & Judy show.
Jack Parkinson, General Manager of Exeter Racecourse, said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the Shetland ponies back to Exeter for what promises to be a fantastic day out for all the family. The Shetlands are full of character and charm, and their races are always a crowd favourite. Combined with our carnival atmosphere and exciting racing, it’s going to be a day to remember.”
A dedicated bus service will run from Exeter St Davids at 12:15pm, returning at 5:20pm.
