Exeter’s Iron Bridge reopens after five-month revamp

Road reopens with new pedestrian and cycle lanes as historic structure gets a 21st-century upgrade

The Iron Bridge in Exeter has reopened on schedule (Monday 16 June), following a major refurbishment to protect the 190-year-old structure from long-term damage.

Built in 1834 to carry horse-drawn traffic into the city via the North Gate, the Grade II listed bridge has been closed since January while Devon County Council carried out extensive works to address drainage issues, cast iron deterioration, and surfacing defects.

Over the past five months, the old road surface was removed, a new waterproofing layer installed, and drainage, signs and lighting upgraded. Areas of the bridge were also repainted, with more comprehensive painting planned in future phases. New expansion joints have been added, and utility services were relocated as part of the works.

The highway layout has been adjusted to support the one-way system introduced in 2021. The south footpath has been widened to two metres, and a dedicated cycle lane added for safer access to the city centre.

The existing 1.8-metre width and three-tonne weight restrictions remain unchanged. New narrowing features have been introduced to discourage use by vehicles that exceed these limits — an ongoing issue that had previously been managed with temporary concrete blocks.

Although minor work to the underside of the bridge will continue, no further closures are required. Occasional overnight closures may take place later in the year for remedial works.

The works were delivered by Bridge Civil Engineering Ltd, on behalf of Devon County Council.
