A new set of retirement apartments is now available to rent in Exmouth.
McCarthy Stone, a national developer of retirement communities, has launched rental flats at The Curlews, a later-living development for people aged over 70.
The development includes 59 one and two-bedroom properties and is located on Merchant Avenue, around two miles from Sandy Bay beach.
The rental launch is part of a national shift in the housing market, with more older people choosing to rent in later life rather than buy.
McCarthy Stone said the move responds to rising demand from people living in homes that no longer meet their needs, but who still want to maintain independence and stay connected to their community.
Tenants at The Curlews have access to a range of on-site facilities including a communal lounge, landscaped gardens, and a chef-run bistro.
There is also a 24-hour emergency call system, door camera entry, and a dedicated Estate Management team providing support.
According to the company, renting can offer a more flexible and convenient option for older people looking to downsize without the costs of buying and selling.
Residents are offered Assured Tenancy Agreements, which allow them to stay for as long as they choose while maintaining the flexibility to move if needed.
McCarthy Stone has reported that tenants often use the opportunity to relocate closer to family, release capital, or reduce the pressures of maintaining a larger home.
Brenda and Laurence Bruce, both 92, recently chose to rent at a McCarthy Stone property in Gloucester to be nearer their son.
“We reached the stage where trying to look after a big house and a large garden was too difficult,” said Laurence.
“Our pensions allow us to comfortably afford the monthly rent, while preserving our capital.”
Another couple, Peter and Jean Clapham, aged 83 and 89, said renting at a similar development in Weybridge allowed them to support their children and grandchildren financially after selling their previous home.
McCarthy Stone said developments like The Curlews can also benefit the wider housing market by freeing up larger properties for local families and reducing pressure on health and social care services.
Rental prices at The Curlews start from £2,495 per calendar month for a one-bedroom apartment.
Purchase options are also available, with prices starting from £302,500.
