Bravery, leadership and unwavering dedication were celebrated in style as Devon & Cornwall Police officers from Exeter, East and Mid Devon were recognised at a special awards ceremony held at Exeter Guildhall.
The evening, led by Superintendent Antony Hart, shone a light on the everyday heroism and behind-the-scenes work that keeps local communities safe - including some remarkable acts of courage.
Superintendent Hart, who oversees the Exeter, East & Mid Devon Local Policing Area, opened the event by reflecting on the importance of recognising the efforts of local officers: “These types of events give us time to pause and reflect on some of the fantastic work that goes on across Exeter, East and Mid Devon. I hope the recipients are really proud of themselves - they have been nominated by their managers and peers.”
Among those honoured was dog handler PC Andi Darbey and Police Dog Merlin, who received a Superintendent’s Certificate alongside PC Ryan Woolacott for their efforts locating a suspect wanted in connection with a rape case. In freezing night-time conditions, and without air support, the team tracked the man through remote terrain near Beer in East Devon, eventually detaining him and securing key evidence.
Retired Exmouth Sector Inspector Grant Leitch was also recognised for his leadership over three decades. His work addressing anti-social behaviour, securing funding for additional patrols, and introducing street marshal powers in Exmouth was described as tireless and transformative.
The team of PC Ben Middleton, PC Linda Ebdon, PC Tom Driver and PC Samuel Bowyer-Thornton received a Superintendent’s Certificate for their role in executing 14 drug warrants across East Devon last year, leading to multiple arrests and the seizure of drugs, cash and assets.
A particularly emotional moment came when PC Sarah Tong received a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation for her bravery. While on foot patrol in Exeter, PC Tong attempted to detain a rough sleeper who turned out to be a wanted suspect. Despite sustaining knife injuries during a violent struggle, she managed to arrest the man. Her resilience and courage were met with heartfelt applause.
Supt Hart added: “The individual acts of bravery and heroism we have heard about tonight give trust and confidence to our public. The support of family and friends is very important - these officers could not do what they do without it.”
